History and Philosophy

Indiana United Methodist Children's Home, Inc. was organized in 1915 by Miss Angie Godwin, a Methodist Deaconess and ordained minister. With great zeal and ability, she operated a home for orphans in Greencastle, Indiana. In 1922, the Methodist Church officially became involved and the Children's Home moved to its present location in Lebanon, Indiana. Over the years, many changes have occurred and the program has developed to meet the needs of the children it serves.

The philosophy at Indiana United Methodist Children Home, Inc. involves a genuine concern and love for each child. Our multi-faceted treatment program aids youth who cannot cope with the everyday responsibilities of family living. Broadly stated, our purpose is to begin with the child's initial level of development and use every available resource to raise that level according to the child's potential.

Today, Indiana United Methodist Children's Home is a residential treatment facility dedicated to helping emotionally troubled youth. The children who benefit most from the services offered by the Home include: non-violent delinquent offenders; children who are experiencing difficulties in the educational setting, both academic and/or behavioral; children who have a history of alcohol or drug abuse but are not in need of inpatient substance abuse treatment; children who have completed inpatient psychiatric or drug/alcohol treatment; children from dysfunctional families where a child cannot develop in a healthy manner; children with various behavior and emotional problems and victims of emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse or neglect.

The mission of Indiana United Methodist Children's Home is to meet the special needs of each child and family served in order to help improve their quality of life. The Board of Trustees and staff members of Indiana United Methodist Children's Home are committed to bringing the highest quality resources available to the implementation of the mission. Property, programs, people and Christian values are the resources utilized to provide a holistic, caring treatment environment capable of effectively serving children and their families. Services to children and families are provided without discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, handicap or religious affiliation.
